George and Josephine Schmidt Memorial Fund

Josephine D. Appell created this Fund to honor her parents’ memory and to perpetuate a family tradition of philanthropy and community service dating back to the early 19th century. Her Small family ancestors were founders of major community institutions, including York Collegiate Institute, York Hospital, and The Children’s Home. “I look forward to working with the Community Foundation to help me identify opportunities to continue my family’s legacy and enhance the quality of life for this and future generations of York Countians,” she said. Mrs. Appell, who has served in many leadership roles throughout her own career in community service, was president of York County Community Foundation in the 1980’s.
