York, PA — The York County Community Foundation (YCCF) is taking a tangible step to advance racial equity in our community with the creation of a grant fund dedicated to support racial equity efforts.
The Racial Equity Fund will have two components – a pool of resources to make grants now and a permanently endowed fund that will generate annual grants for racial equity initiatives year after year. Decisions for this fund will be made by a new advisory committee of volunteer community members. The committee will determine the purpose, parameters, and process for making grant awards from the fund. Those parameters are still being designed and grant applications are not being accepted at this time. More information about the committee is available at www.yccf.org. Grant application information will be posted when it is available.
“YCCF’s vision is that York County is a growing, prosperous and united community where all have unsurpassed opportunities to thrive. This vision cannot be achieved when members of our community have limited access to healthcare, educational opportunities, and financial well-being as a result of their race,” said Jane M. Conover, MSW, President & CEO of YCCF. Krista Darr, YCCF’s Board Chair adds, “This is a first step. We know reversing the impacts of racial injustice will require persistent effort and continued financial resources over many years. We are committed to this effort, not just in response to recent events. An endowed fund means we can continue to invest in an equitable community for years to come.”
“The committee is excited to embark on this new initiative together and we are committed to it being successful,” added Racial Equity Fund committee chair Lisa Kennedy, Family Peer Support Specialist at York County Department of Human Services and York City School Board Director.
YCCF knows that philanthropy is not immune to institutional racism and that it needs to be part of the solution. Since 2018, YCCF has made well over $1.5 million in grants to reduce educational, economic, and health inequities, revitalize neighborhoods, and promote diversity and inclusion. While YCCF will continue to invest in high-impact solutions to the challenges facing marginalized communities in York County, the Racial Equity Fund and its advisory committee provide an opportunity for YCCF to learn how to address those challenges using the racial equity lens.
