Richard Maye Fund
Richard (Rick) Maye was born in 1946 in Scranton, PA. While in high school, he self-published a newspaper with current events of the neighborhood, but only had 2 or 3 subscribers. After graduating from college with a BA degree in English, Rick served 2 years in the Army, stationed in Germany.
After the Army, Rick went to work for the Veteran’s Administration, with his first assignment in Pittsburgh. Eventually, he transferred to Washington D.C. and bought a home in Fredericksburg, VA, from which he commuted by rail into the city. Rick was a gambler by nature, playing Bingo, traveling to casinos and always hoping to win the lottery.
Rick loved dogs, especially big dogs! He had a special fondness for Great Danes, and at one time had three under his roof, but always at least one. Rick was a skilled remodeler, successfully tackling many home improvement projects. He made sure that there was a phone in every room of his house (you never know) but could not make the transition to using a cellular phone, no matter how hard all of us tried to teach him.
Rick had a wonderful sense of humor and optimism which he never lost, even when consumed by cancer. His final years were not pleasant, but you would never have known it by talking with him. He loved live performances and old movies, especially ones starring Judy Garland.
This fund to support the performing arts is a tribute to his memory.
