Memorial Health Fund at York County Community Foundation Awards Over $882,330 in Grants to Local Nonprofits

(York, PA, February 13, 2025) – The Memorial Health Fund, a supporting organization of the York County Community Foundation, recently awarded over $882,330 in grants to seventeen York County nonprofit organizations. The grant-funded projects address many of the most compelling issues impacting the health of residents in York County and surrounding communities.

“The Memorial Health Fund is proud to support organizations that are working tirelessly to provide much-needed physical and mental health services, as well as social support to people in and around our community,” said, Michelle Hovis, Chair of the Memorial Health Fund Bord.

The Latest Round of Grants From the Memorial Health Fund Include:

  • $375,000 to LifePath Christian Ministries for its Flex and Inclement Weather Shelters to provide safe housing for families facing homelessness, along with case management services to help the families stabilize. LifePath’s flex shelter provides a safe space for those who do not fit any other provider’s criteria, for example, fathers with children.
  • $100,000 to Family First Health for start-up costs to open a community pharmacy in York City that offers discounted pricing for low-income patients struggling to afford medications.
  • $80,000 over three years to York County SPCA for its Safe Pet Program: Keeping Families and Pets Together. This program seeks to prevent the unnecessary surrender of animals by providing free in-shelter pet boarding services to families facing situations of homelessness, fleeing, or attempting to flee domestic and other violence, or being displaced from their homes due to natural disasters or house fires.
  • $50,000 to Girls on the Run Mid State PA to provide afterschool programs supporting the mental, emotional, social, and physical health of girls through evidence-based curricula, physical activity, mentorship, and peer connections. Participants will develop a robust toolkit of life skills, connect to their community, and complete a 5K, while building confidence and the ability to set and accomplish high, yet realistic goals, and become leaders of their own lives.
  • $50,000 to VFW Auxiliary Post 7012 toward the construction of an ADA-compliant building with a Veteran’s Resource Center to assist handicapped and older members – many of whom are Veterans.
  • $38,500 to the School District of the City of York to implement a Universal, Social, Emotional, and Behavioral Screener for students to help identify which of its 7,000 students would benefit from Tier II and Tier III support.
  • $32,076 to Emmaus Home, Inc., to open an additional community-integrated group rehabilitation home in York County for people with intellectual disabilities to receive individualized support to improve life and work skills development, health and wellness, and community integration support.
  • $30,000 to Byrnes Health Education Center for its Preventive Health Education for York County to provide engaging learning opportunities that help individuals build the necessary skills to make healthy decisions throughout their lifetime.
  • $25,000 to Community Progress Council, Inc., to support a bi-lingual, HUD-certified Housing Counselor to ensure financial and housing equity in York County and meet the demand for housing counseling and education services provided by the Community Progress Council and other collaborative partners in the community.
  • $20,000 to the Family Health Council of Central Pennsylvania to understand the needs of marginalized pregnant and postpartum women in York County by conducting a needs assessment using focus groups and key informant interviews that explore the knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors of pregnant and postpartum women who have been marginalized based on race, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status.
  • $19,255 to Misericordia Nursing & Rehabilitation Center to enhance its Nursing & Rehabilitation Center’s program offerings of sensory and cognitive stimulation to all residents; ranging from those who experience low levels of cognition to high-functioning rehab residents.
  • $15,000 to White Rose Leadership Institute for the 2024 Give Local York Health Care Stretch Pool to grow local giving and build nonprofit capacity in York County.
  • $12,500 to Planned Parenthood Keystone, to continue providing Rapid STI Testing for HIV and STIs, two serious health issues that when left untreated can have serious consequences.
  • $12,000 to Bethel Commandment Church of the Living God, to increase the capacity of its weekly soup kitchen by upgrading its kitchen facilities, expanding meal distribution efforts, and sustaining impactful community outreach initiatives.
  • $10,000 to Junior Achievement of South Central PA, for its STEM Summit program designed to inspire 9th or 10th-grade students to explore careers in healthcare through hands-on activities and interactions with community volunteers who share their life and career experiences.
  • $10,000 to Suicide Prevention of York, for its Hope For York: A Community Approach to Suicide Prevention program. Through partnering with the evidence-based, peer-to-peer, national organization, Hope Squad, United Against Targeted Violence, and the York County Coroner’s Office they plan to provide additional programs to the community and lessen the suicide rate in York County.
  • $3,000 to Northeast Neighborhood Association for its Cookware for All program to provide residents of the Northeast Neighborhood of York City with adequate cookware to enable them to prepare healthy foods for themselves and their families.
