If you’re 70½ or older, you can donate directly from your IRA custodian to York County Community Foundation (YCCF) via a qualified charitable distribution (QCD). Because a qualified charitable distribution is an above-the-line deduction, your adjusted gross income is reduced. Lower adjusted gross income leads to lower taxable income and therefore higher charitable impact.
To qualify:
- You must be age 70½ or older.
- Transfers must go directly from the IRA custodian to YCCF.
- Distributions can be made to YCCF Designated, Field of Interest, Fund for York County, Agency, and Scholarship Funds. Distributions cannot be made to Donor Advised Funds or Supporting Organizations at YCCF.
Benefits of qualified charitable distributions:
- Distribution limit in 2026 is $111,000 per individual ($222,000 for married couples filing jointly).
- You do not need to itemize deductions. QCDs are not included in your gross income. Typically, QCDs provide more tax benefit than a required minimum distribution (RMD) coupled with a charitable deduction.
- QCDs count toward your required minimum distribution for the year from your IRA.
