Background:
We get that people think aging isn’t sexy. In fact, we live in a society that is “drunk on youth” and too often views aging as ONLY an impairment or decline.
This is why York County Community Foundation’s Embracing Aging and TroveStreet® initiatives work to dismantle ageism at both the individual and community levels.
Ageism refers to stereotypes (how we think), prejudice (how we feel) and discrimination (how we act) toward others or oneself based on age. It negatively impacts our health and well-being, our financial security, and the economy. It exists in many forms, influencing everything from personal interactions to public policy, and impacts us at every age.
3 Steps You Can Do to Help Dismantle Ageism:
- Become aware of and acknowledge your views on aging
- Check and challenge ageist thoughts, feelings, actions
- Connect and act when observe or experience ageism
To learn things to do to help you with these steps, call Cathy Bollinger, CSA, Executive Director of Embracing Aging and TroveStreet® at 717.848.3733 or email at cbollinger@yccf.org to learn more.

The York County Community Foundation board and staff are committed to making York County equitable and inclusive. We will prioritize our own internal education on systemic racism, ageism, and other forms of bias. All decision-making will be mindful of equitable practices and diversity, including decisions about grantmaking, donor services, and community initiatives. To fuel, lead, and support community transformation, we will be bold, intentional, authentic, and public about our values and commitment to racial equity. Sharing knowledge and power is essential to this commitment.
