Stories from the Community Foundation

Connecting York (Y-FI)

A thriving downtown today needs more than great shops, wonderful restaurants, and safe streets; it needs free wireless access! Enter Y-Fi, a free community wireless internet network, currently serving Market, Cherry Lane, North Beaver Street, and the Colonial Courthouse Complex.

Y-Fi, which partners with local businesses and community organizations to share bandwidth and expansion costs, is a great economic development tool. Free wireless access can help attract and retain businesses, keep customers coming back, as well as entice young professionals to spend time downtown. Because this is a free service, it benefits everyone who lives, works, or visits our growing downtown.

The Community Foundation awarded an $11,000 grant from the Fund for York County to support this ever-expanding wireless network. Our Fund for York County provides the flexibility for the Community Foundation to meet the changing needs of the community. Bringing people downtown to reinvigorate our city streets is just one way we help create a vibrant York County.
