NONPROFIT COMMUNITY INVESTMENT

Nonprofit Community Investment Fund Grants are awarded from the Community Foundation's Fund for York County and Children's Funds to charitable 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations and government agencies for projects that enhance the quality of life for York County's citizens. Grants are awarded across the interest areas of arts and culture, civic affairs, community and economic development, education, the elderly, youth, health and human services, and the environment.

Beginning in 2009, Nonprofit Community Investment Fund Grants will be awarded for core services - strengthening the safety net for York County's nonprofit organizations. This change is an effort to meet the most pressing needs of York's nonprofits in today's difficult economy.

This year-long rolling grant program has no deadline. Grant applications are presented to the Distribution Committee on a bi-monthly basis for consideration and approval. This shortened decision cycle will create a "fast track" for needed support during this time of economic uncertainty.

In 2009, $100,000 will be made available from the Nonprofit Community Investment Fund for core service grants. The Community Foundation is also reaching out to donors to leverage additional funds to match the Nonprofit Community Investment Fund allowing for additional core service grants. The maximum award for a nonprofit organization will be $10,000, with only one application per organization permitted.

GOALS. To make the greatest possible impact with limited funds, York County Community Foundation has set its focus for 2009 on providing grants for eligible York County nonprofit organizations to:
  1. Create an emergency "safety net" to support core service needs for nonprofit organizations during an uncertain economic climate - provide short-term support to vital organizations.

    • Provide necessary funding to continue core programs where current funding has dried up - no new programs.
    • Provide resources to ensure core staffing needs where other grant funding may have been cut - to deliver needed services to clients.

  2. Support mergers and acquisitions and collaborative efforts - provide means for needed programs to survive despite funding shortfalls as many small nonprofits focused on single programs will be particularly challenged in the coming years.

    • Provide funding and advice for merging small nonprofits into established more stable nonprofit organizations - to preserve programs through consolidation.
    • Provide resources for nonprofit collaboration for core service programs where two or more agencies might operate more efficiently and eliminate duplicated services - no new programs.
